To know about Gut health it is firstly very important to know what is Gut. The esophagus (Food Pipe), Stomach and intestines together form the Gut. All food is ultimately broken down in the gut to a simple form that enters the bloodstream and supplies nutrients throughout our body. This is only possible with a healthy digestive system. The function performed by these organs together with the help of good bacteria is called Gut Health. A healthy Gut contains healthy bacteria.

A healthy gut contributes to a strong immune system, heart health, brain health, improved mood, healthy sleep, and effective digestion, and it may help prevent some cancers and autoimmune diseases.

The gut, or digestive tract, has been deemed our “second brain.”

Do you know Chewing your food thoroughly and eating your meals slowly can help to promote full digestion and absorption of nutrients. This may help you reduce your digestive discomfort and help maintain a healthy gut.Consuming cultured dairy products, such as yogurt and kefir, promotes healthy bacteria into your gut.

It has been found that harmful forms of bacteria that grow in the mouth most of the time make their way into the gut or the bloodstream. Hence oral hygiene is also very important to have a healthy gut.

Staying hydrated benefits your entire body, including your gut. Hence Drinking 3 litres of water each day helps balance the good bacteria in the gut, and also helps the lining of the intestines. Sometimes, Stress affects our digestive system in many ways. It can cause a decrease in blood and oxygen flow to the stomach, causing an imbalance in gut bacteria and causing inflammation. Often prebiotics and probiotics are helpful in reducing the stress Everyone at some point or the other experiences digestive problems such as abdominal pain, bloating, loose stools, constipation, heartburn, nausea or vomiting. But if these problems persist one needs to be cautious.

There are simple ways to make our Gut healthy and allow our digestive organs to function well. Hence we need to take care.

· Consume a variety of whole grains and lentils.

· Don't over stuff your stomach.

· Eat fresh and seasonal vegetables and fruits daily.

· Eat homemade yogurt.

· Eat nuts daily in moderation. A small handful is enough.

· Avoid diet drinks and sugar-free, low-fat foods. Artificial sweeteners can cause bloating. · Drink water throughout the day.

Fermented foods like kimchi, kombucha ,and sauerkraut also help in improving our Gut Health.We in India have many fermented foods like idli dhokla etc which are very good for gut health.

Fruits and Vegetables like Pineapple, raw onion and raw garlic also promote good bacteria into our Gut.

Apart from all these, another important factor is adequate sleep and regular exercise. This naturally promotes good gut health. Last but not the least is to avoid too much intake of antibiotics which leads to the destruction of good bacteria in the stomach and affects our Gut Health.
